Gaston's Place

Gaston lived in this five-story walk-up with an amazing private balcony overlooking the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, complete with the surprisingly pleasant white noise of traffic. The first time Olive stayed over, she peed on Gaston's bed and ate his favorite hat.

Emma's Place

Emma lived in this sweet old apartment where her landlord hoarded an assortment of furniture and industrial tools on the front lawn. Gaston would heroically stand in the freezing cold to help make Olive officially potty-trained. In his words: "I couldn't live with this girl unless her dog was potty-trained, so there was no other choice." Emma is eternally grateful.

Our First Home Together

Emma and Gaston's first apartment together!! Their landlord, Paul, was the nicest eccentric man who, upon meeting them, said: "This is a special apartment for couples. Every couple who lives here ends up getting married." Looks like they're maintaining the record :) Although the floors were disorientingly slanted, this was their favorite apartment.

Quarantine at the Gonzalez House

Aaaaaand we all know what happened here… they had to leave their beloved slanted home and quarantine at Gaston's parents' house in New Jersey. Emma got an immersive Gonzalez family experience very early on in their relationship. At its peak, their pod contained nine people — summers were filled with pool days, wine, s'mores, and stories. During such a devastating time, they felt incredibly lucky to have so much quality family time.

The Blackman Family Experience

Off to Chicago, land of Malört. It was time for Gaston to be immersed in the Blackman family. While Emma worked nonstop in the basement like a gremlin, Gaston bonded with her parents and family dog, Parker. Olive was introduced to her favorite toy, Monkey. Monkey's current state is a testament to everlasting love — in sickness and in health, but mostly sickness.

Brother's Townhouse

Missing the city, they moved into Gaston's older brother's vacant townhouse. They continued quarantining and enjoyed the Covid perk of cocktail delivery.

The Covid Mistake

Sweet freedom! They scored a Covid deal on a very old but "charming" Greenpoint apartment. Special features included: disintegrating floorboards, a family of possums, loud upstairs neighbors, vomit in the entryway, and the calming smell of meth from across the hall. This was a mistake made through Covid-colored glasses.

European Adventure

Emma, Gaston, and Olive spent three months in Brussels visiting Gaston's sister and her husband. They also hiked the Swiss border, ate gelato in Italy, and went to burlesque shows in France. In Brussels, Olive met George. They became fast friends and even traveled to Paris together to share croissants under the Eiffel Tower. Olive and George haven't seen each other since, but they'll always have Paris.

Sunny Williamsburg

While abroad, Emma and Gaston decided they wanted to live somewhere more palatable. They broke their lease at the meth apartment and found a sunny two-story apartment in Williamsburg. Notable events included rescuing a baby sparrow named Birdy and Gaston getting into a PhD program.

Pittsburgh Adventure

With a bittersweet goodbye to New York, they moved to Pittsburgh for Gaston's PhD in Mathematics. Emma kept her gremlin-like work habits, while Gaston juggled a full-time job and classes. They had just as much fun though, making many friends and enjoying backyard hangs and breweries. After seven months, Gaston hit his stress limit and postponed the PhD to focus on work. It was a sad early exit, but we'll always have Pittsburgh.

Home Sweet Home

And here they are! This is the only apartment they've lived in for longer than a year, and it truly feels like home. They love their community, morning walks through the park, and massively overpriced coffee shops. By now, Olive knows every store that gives her treats and constantly pulls them to visit the chinchillas at the local pet store. Greenpoint may technically be an environmental hazard site — compelling Emma to get the air quality tested before renewing the lease — but their love for it is pure.

And The Journey Continues...
